Member Nominated Trustee Director

Welcome to the Trustee Director Hub where we showcase all you’ll need to know about this crucial role. You can also apply directly from this Hub by going to Next steps to access the application form.

Introduction

We’re looking for people to help us run the Acme Pension Scheme. If you’re thinking “This doesn’t sound like it’s for me”, you may well be just the person we’re looking for!

Being part of the team is hugely rewarding. You’ll get the opportunity to use the skills you already have and to develop new ones. It also means that you’ll be doing something really important by helping to make our Scheme as good as it can be.

It’ll involve a commitment from you - we estimate that you’ll need to set aside between 10 and 15 days a year to make a success of the role.

What we do – the Trustee Team

We have an essential role in managing the Example Pension Scheme, working in collaboration with the {{company_name}}.

Our main responsibilities are to make sure that our Scheme is well managed and to ensure we can pay members’ pensions when they are due. Overall, we’re responsible for keeping our Scheme running as efficiently and effectively as possible. This includes working with our advisers, considering relevant factors, and disregarding the irrelevant ones, to reach sound and sensible decisions on how to best manage our Scheme and its investments.

The role means you’ll hear and see confidential information that you’ll not be able to share with others. This is just a natural part of the job!

And of course, our Scheme must continue to comply with the laws that surround how UK pension schemes are managed, and our Scheme’ rules.

Working together, we aspire to always act with:

  • Fairness,
  • Independence, and
  • Integrity.

What we believe

We believe that our team will be stronger if it’s made up of people from a wide range of backgrounds, who have different life experiences and knowledge. This means we have wider discussions as we try to see things from different perspectives. Ultimately, this helps us to reach robust decisions.

Who you'll be working with

Our team is made up of nine Trustee Directors; five are chosen by the Company and the remaining four are chosen from our Scheme’s members.

  • Fernado Alonso (Chair)
  • Lewis Hamilton
  • Lydia Ko
  • Nelly Korda
  • Charles LeClerc
  • Minjee Lee
  • Lando Norris
  • Max Verstappen
  • You?

We’re supported by several professional advisers, including:

  • Brooke Henderson – Pensions Manager and Scheme Secretary
  • Oscar Piastri – Scheme Actuary – ABC Company
  • Equiniti Retirement Solutions – Scheme Administrator
  • George Russell – Scheme Lawyer – XYZ and Partners
  • Carlos Sainz – Investment Consultant – PQR Group

Who are we looking for

The short answer is – it could be you!

Please remember, you don’t need to be a pension expert - we’ll support you all the way with the tools that you’ll need – you simply need to be inquisitive by nature with a good sense of what’s right and wrong.

There are a few eligibility requirements which include:

  • You must be either an Active or Pensioner member of our Scheme; and
  • You’ll need to be able to attend meetings – sometimes over Microsoft Teams (or similar) but also in person, normally in London.

Joining our team is like becoming a company director. Therefore, the law prohibits you from becoming a Trustee Director if any of the following apply to you:

  • A disqualification as a company director;
  • A conviction of any offence involving dishonesty or deception;
  • Bankruptcy or impounding;
  • A failure to settle an agreement with creditors; or
  • A previous suspension, or disqualification as a Trustee by The Pensions Regulator (TPR).

Your initial appointment will be for four years. You can resign at any time, but we hope you’ll stay with us for the full term.

How we’ll support you

Aspects of this role may seem daunting but never fear, we’ll support you throughout your time with us. You’re not expected to be a pensions expert – we’ve professional advisers who are here to fill that role – your job will be to consider the advice they give and decide, with your fellow Trustee Directors, how best to act.

Whilst you don’t need any specific qualifications to be a Trustee Director, we urge you to consider completing The Pension Regulator’s Trustee Toolkit. This online training tool covers all the key aspects of being a pension scheme trustee. It even includes short self-assessment modules – great to give you the confidence to apply what you’ve learnt.

To find out more, visit the Trustee Toolkit website.
